  1. To prepare wood for painting, use fine sandpaper to lightly sand wood surface.  Remove dust with paper towel.

  2. Use flat brush to apply paint to sides and back of canvas.  Let dry and apply second coat.  Use flat brush to apply paint to top of canvas in a coordinating color.  Let dry and apply second coat.  Paint must be thoroughly dry before carving.

  3. Place carving pattern on canvas.  Tape in place.  Slide transfer paper under pattern, carbon side down.  Use stylus or pen to trace pattern lines.  When complete, remove pattern and transfer paper.

  4. Carve a small area at a time.  For example, if carving a vine, use a slanted knife to cut along pattern lines as a stop cut.  Remove paint between lines with whichever knife seems appropriate and is easy to use.  It is not necessary to go very deep, just the paint and a small amount of wood will be removed.  The dots on the pattern do not need to be carved as they will be painted once the carving is complete.

  5. Use an eraser to remove any pencil marks except for the dots.

  6. Use the wooden end of a paint brush to make dots.  Dip the end of the paint brush in paint.  Touch paint where the dot should be and lift. Let dry.  Practice on a scrap of wood to make sure the dots are the proper size.

  7. Apply 2-3 coats of spray varnish.  Let dry between coats.
