Hot-Air-Balloon-Design-Woodcarving-Project

Supplies:

  • Basswood Oval Plaque #1838, Walnut Hollow®
  • Carving Knives #23907, Walnut Hollow®
  • Graphite Transfer Paper #1095, Walnut Hollow®
  • Brushes: Small Flat Brush, Medium Flat Brush
  • Copy of Hot Air Balloon pattern

Other Supplies:  brush-on varnish, eraser, paper towel, pencil or stylus, sandpaper, tape, wood stain, Medium Brown

Instructions:

  1. Use sandpaper to lightly sand entire wood surface.  Remove dust with paper towel.

  2. Center pattern on wood and tape in place.  Slide Graphite Transfer Paper under pattern, carbon side down.

  3. Use pencil or stylus to trace pattern.

  4. Refer to photo for suggestions.  Use a rounded edge knife to carve away wood surrounding pattern.  Use straight edged knives for deeper smooth cuts.  Use various size gouges to correspond with the pattern lines.

  5. Use eraser to remove any remaining graphite lines.  Use sandpaper to remove any rough areas.

  6. Use a small flat brush to apply a medium stain to outer edge of plaque.  Follow directions on container.  If some stain gets onto the front of the plaque, remove with a light sanding.

  7. Use a medium brush to apply 2-3 coats of brush-on varnish.  Dry completely between coats.  Follow directions on container.
