  1. To prepare wood for wood burning, use sandpaper to lightly sand wood surface.  Remove dust with paper towel.

  2. Place pattern on center of plaque.  Tape in place.  Slide Graphite Paper under pattern, carbon side down.  Use pencil or stylus to trace pattern.  Remove pattern and graphite paper.

  3. Before using Creative Versa-Tool™ read through and follow all safety precautions on packaging.  Attach Universal Point to tool.  Tighten with pliers.  Secure Stand to hard surface with tape.  Place tool on stand.  Plug into electric outlet and heat for 4-5 minutes.  Practice on a scrap of wood before beginning project to get a feel for the tool.  Use a light touch. Do not press hard, just let the tool do the work and gently glide over the wood.

  4. Use Universal Point to burn the traced lines.  For straight lines, use a metal ruler as a guide.  Place ruler on graphite line and pull point along edge of ruler.  Shade alphabet letters.  When complete, unplug tool and let cool.

  5. Use eraser to remove any visible graphite lines.

  6. Apply wood sealer to wood surface.  To make a wood sealer, mix equal parts clear shellac and denatured alcohol.  Apply with a foam brush.  Store unused sealer in a safe and labeled container.

  7. Add color to the flags with Oil Colored Pencils.  Use blending stick or Q-tip to smooth and blend colors.

  8. Apply 2-3 coats of spray varnish for a protective finish.
