  • 5” of cording
  • Regular paint brush
  • Stencil brush
  • Glue
  • Paper towel
  • Sandpaper
  • spray varnish
  • Tape

Instructions:

  1. To prepare box for painting, use sandpaper to lightly sand wood surface. Remove dust with paper towel.

  2. Use brush to apply paint to entire box. Let dry. Lightly sand, apply second coat and let dry.

  3. Position stencil on top of lid. Tape in place. Use stencil brush with a coordinating color to add a checkerboard design. Let a little of the base coat show through. When lid is complete, stencil a checkerboard design around base of box. Refer to photo for placement. Let dry.

  4. Use tape to create a fine line around edge of lid:  Apply two rows of tape around edge of lid, leaving approximately 1/16” of an inch between tape lines. Paint line with a coordinating paint. (To keep paint from bleeding under tape, apply a thin coat of the basecoat on line. Let dry. Now apply the coordinating color.)  Remove tape. Let dry.

  5. Use brush to apply coordinating paint to wooden letters. Let dry. Position letters evenly across front base of box. Use glue to secure in place. Let dry.

  6. Apply 2-3 coats of spray varnish for a protective finish.

  7. To create handle for lid, use glue to adhere cording to front center edge of lid. Glue decorative buttons over ends of cording. Let dry.
